Armed with nets, bags and a variety of tools, groups of beachcombers decked-out in their beach bum best to scour the white sandy beaches for garbage whilst their diver counterparts descend into the deep blue to do their part underwater.
If you think it sounds like too much hard work well, think again! Organized by Berjaya Redang under the PADI Project Aware initiative, the Redang Island Clean-up Day takes place every October and it's something you really don't want to miss.
There's a lot more to do than just collecting garbage.
Every year specially invited guests, experts in the field of marine conservation, hold talks and seminars and conduct practical workshops on the importance and necessity of preserving our maritime treasures. Sessions are short, fun and educational.
For those with trigger-happy fingers there's the photography competition - take a winning shot and walk away with spanking new cameras and holiday packages. You don't have to be a pro - just let your creative juices flow and you might just get lucky!
This year divers get a chance to try their hand at underwater photography without having to invest in expensive kit.
Thanks to Scuba Harmony, one of the major sponsors, divers can rent for a very reasonable rate, a fully kitted underwater digital camera - and I'm talking about the 'real' stuff not the instant-camera rubbish being sold in souvenir shops!
And if you think you have a knack for taking pictures under the sea you'll be able to pick up one of the aforementioned cameras at really cheap prices.
It gets even better - participants get to enjoy the facilities of one of the best beach resorts in Malaysia. Berjaya Redang boasts luxurious and spacious rooms - all are well appointed with open baths and verandas big enough for two or more people to stretch out for a tan. The resort spa offers a full menu of treatments and, best of all, the resort is situated in a secluded bay complete with private beach and beach bar!
Most importantly, the itinerary is not too packed and leaves you with plenty of time to indulge yourself and to spend quality time with friends and family. This special clean-up package includes full board (i.e. twin-share accommodation and all meals provided) with free dives and snorkelling trips thrown in.
Getting to the resort is easy. Simply drive east along the highway and head towards Kuala Terengganu or fly there on one of the many available airlines.
Now if you really want to do it in style and in comfort you can always fly DIRECT to the resort on Berjaya Air from Subang Airport in Kuala Lumpur. Doing so will get you there nice and early and really give you that 'I'm on a holiday' vibe.
So do your part for nature and have a good time while you're at it!
